Sex and purity
It officially happened today--some of my views on sex came out today. Someone asked about my marriage affiliation (whether I am or not--even though everyone probably knows that already), and instead of answering I raised up my naked left hand. Of course, they quickly rebutted by saying I wore one on my other hand. A girl then stated it was the wrong hand, but then asked what my ring was for. So, I told her it was a purity ring. She responded, "Oh. *pause* OOOOhhhhhh....." Then they asked all kinds of questions, ranging from "would I date someone who isn't 'pure'" to "what if I met someone and she wanted to 'take things to another level.'" I told them this wasn't really an option, or something negotiable with my potential girlfriend. This is how is was. And really, am I going to be seriously dating someone who isn't going to respect that and probably desire the same thing? The bell then rang, so there wasn't much chance to observe/analyze their response to this information....but I'm a little curious as to their thoughts. I guess this is one way to talk about God in the classroom without mentioning His name. :)
As a side, what kind of hits am I going to get for having sex and naked in the same post?

I have to ask how did you get onto that topic in a math class?
Some of my students find the need to ask any and every detail about my life. Some I answer, some I don't, depending on my mood. In particular, they seem to find my relationships (or lack thereof) with women particularly intersting. We had a few minutes of homework at the end of class, and instead of working they brought up these relationships and the topics I mentioned in the post. So there you go.
We really are just interested in you and you only talk about yourself in one class you should share it with all the students who ask. they might respect you more> they may have the same beleives as you although some of your students already have children.
Well, only one class really presses me about personal details. A few ask, but when I hesitate or don't respond right away, a lot just let it go. Plus, it depends on the class. Certain classes (that will remain nameless) I need to keep on task as much as possible or else they'll go crazy...
I have to say that the teachers that share more than books make more of an impact on me than those who have no personality.
So which am I? Stiff and boring with no personality, or... What if I have no actual personality to begin with?
I've never seen you as a classroom teacher. (hint hint, can you guess who I am??)
Saying Shawn doesn't have a personality is like saying he doesn't like pizza. :P
Anonymous, I have no idea who you are.
Christine, I'm not sure whether that's a compliment or an insult. :)
I saw you put that ice cube down Isa's shirt at Jazz at the roof
I think the other anonymous has a very good point. Teachers need to share more then just homework to get respect. Students have more respect for teachers that aren't afraid to put their life out there for us to understand. And from the reactions I have seen from those in that class, I think they respect you more since they themselves cant wear a purity ring and be honest. Besides you are teaching in a small town high school.. Where everyone knows everything about everyone. So, since you are a teacher, we have to know about you. Oh, and the last teacher that actually discussed God in class, well, she was the crazy spanish teacher... No, not Wheeler. But Thompson.. But note, shes gone.. And you asked which one you are, you are usually stiff and boring. until we get of track and onto a different topic. Just thought I'd answer that question for you. :D
Yeah! I have Carmel readers! I never would have guessed, but that's kind of cool. I miss you guys! You need to come to Fountain Square sometime soon...but not this Friday. I hate Tim...
As for no personality and getting off-track, it'd be a lot of fun sometime to just sit and chat with my students for long periods of time. But, I do have a job to do, and I do feel math is really important--if not for the actual content, just learning how to think analytically is so very important. So, I'm working on balancing the two.
Some of us Carmel kids have been watching your Blog since two weeks after you started teaching us. We're nothing if not internet savy!! A bunch of us are going to Fountain Square this Friday, b/c we haven't been able to dance much! Oh well, maybe we'll see you next time!
So cool--I had no idea. What prompted you to start posting now?
I wasn't sure if you'd think we were stalking you, so when your students posted comments, we figured that they are much closer targets than we are!
Well, I love hearing from you guys, especially since I don't get to seeyou, so keep posting! And, I don't get too freaked out, so don't worry about it--students wanting to chat with me lets me stroke my ego a little. :)
