I hate being a jerk

But, I'm going to have to. One of my classes is just getting out of control, and I'm tired of dealing with it. And this isn't the "I stayed up until 11:30 with a friend" talking, either. But, I'm going to talk again with my elder next door, and some heads are going to get knocked, I think. Not my style, but they're forcing my hand. So, prayer that I am discerning but do what I need to do, even if it ruffles some (a lot) of feathers.

Yeah, it's not fun, but you know it's good for 'em.

In fact, a teacher just told me yesterday that several students readily admitted their need for boundaries and guidlines; they said that they basically want someone to be "parents", i.e. giving them rules and then holding them accountable for them. Wild, huh??
(yes, this came from a very diverse student group, not just "the good kids". makes you wonder how many out there have also reached this conclusion...)

I know, I know. And I want to set those standards. It's just that I haven't done it yet, and so that first time will be a little weird. Once I've done it, I think, it will make things a lot easier to do it again--I'll feel much more comfortable with the process.

Oh yeah, and of course, today they were probably the best they've been all year. Go figure. Maybe they realize it...if not, I'll lay done the smackdown tomorrow.

I take it you are discussing your 6th hour class? I saw you talking to Pirtle after 6th hour. Good luck. Maybe if you actually ask your students why they tend to act up, you would have a better understand as to what is going on. When you get too advanced for where we are and when we ask questions, instead of using terms we dont understand, use terms we can get. When we dont understand something, and when i say we, I mean the class as a whole, go over it untill we honestly feel as if we get it. Oh, and if you are talking about the jokes cracked on your personal life, crack jokes back. You are a teacher at a small high school. Teachers even know whats going on with students besides hearing gossip in the halls.

Chicken or the egg...some people don't get it because they talk, and then complain because they can't get it, even though they weren't trying the first time. Those people I have little sympathy for. The others that really are trying and getting frustrated, I will work with them until the cows come home. Of course, we also have to balance things with the fact that some of my classes are advanced, academic track classes, and I can't go too slow. The joys of teaching...
